We are the lazy generation.
At least, that's what they tell us.
A plethora of information at our fingertips, yet we choose social media. Why talk face-to-face when we can simply send a message? They argue that we're loosing our abilities to communicate, that we'll never be able to get jobs if we sit on our asses all day.
A world of opportunity, yet we choose to play games indoors. Why play soccer with real people when we can act as famous players on-line? They argue that our laziness is causing us to gain weight, that we'll never live up the expectations that our parents lived up to.
But is this true?
What is going on in the world today?
The world is so saturated with the media, trying to keep up with it is almost overwhelmed. "Breaking News" is broken before they start, reports before the dust has settled. They call us apathetic, but that isn't our fault. We did not start this trend and we will not be the ones to end it. The amount of inaccurate information flowing through our speakers isn't our doing.
Reality television isn't about reality. In fact, the lives we live are so distant from the ones we see that its laughable. But teenagers are not sitting in the director's chair. Our real is so far from the "ideal" that most is us have given up. How can we have role-models to look up to when a paint-brush has been thrown over their actual appearance?
Music was an escape, but look what's happened now. The age of rock and roll has died out, instead the techno-thump of bass shocks itself through the speakers. Music was once used to bring people to action, now we listen to auto-tuned voices complaining about materialistic matters. But we did not create the radio stations, we did not throw this music into our life.
So, I ask: who is to blame for our behavior?
Or maybe, I should ask, who is to praise?
Because despite all this, we are the generation of innovators. We have tackled technology and the latest science to bring about change. We have teenagers creating possible cures for cancer in science fairs, professional musicians from their basements, PhotoShop wizards, and creative writers.
We as a generation are passionate. We may be lazy, but only because that's what the world is trying to get us to be. Millions of computer jobs have been created, technology demands are through the roof. We are the generation to bring this together, to take all that has been presented to us and turn it around.
We were born into chaos, born into this world as it all falls apart. We are not a collectivist culture; it's every one for themselves. We put up our fronts, but beneath we're just as scared as you are. We know that we've been thrown into the fire and we're preparing in the only way we know how.
They ask us how we plan to make something of ourselves.
But shouldn't we ask what we can do for the world?
